Ministry of Defence,
Wellington

Dear Sir or Madam,

On April 23rd at approximately 5PM I was visiting a house of a friend in Brooklyn where there were 3 adults present including myself, when we saw a UFO traversing from Kau Kau, South. The sky was clear to the North, however, it disappeared in to [SIC] [the] cloud in the South. We had an extremely good view of the object and could positively identify that it was not an aircraft seen about our sky. We rang the Met office to ask about weather balloons etc. and they said that they hadn’t sent any up at that time. (It was definitely not like a balloon).

We rang the Ministry of Defence and by request we gave them our names and phone numbers as they said they will contact us. One of your staff rang back (To redacted information number… the house from where we saw the object) and asked her to ring the duty officer at Air Traffic Control. They asked her when she phoned, to describe the object, asked her if she had been to the press which she replied ‘no’, thanked her and then ended the conversation.

The reason why I am writing this account is that I wish to know why we haven’t heard any further developments on the subject from your department or whoever else is concerned.

I feel it is a [INDISCERNIBLE] right to receive some explanation as to your department findings. A simple explanation of whether you are able to account for the sighting would be appreciated even if your findings were negative.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Yours faithfully,

Letter of Acknowledgement

WELLINGTON.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for your letter of 27 July 1976, about the possible sighting of a UFO by yourself and friends on 23 April last.

I confirm that your telephone call to this Ministry is recorded in the duty officer’s log for the day in question, as is also his return call during which he asked you to inform the Air Traffic Control Centre at Wellington Airport.

In response to your request for further information, my enquiries show that the incident which you reported was not subsequently confirmed by any further sightings either to the Ministry of Defence or the Air Traffic Control Centre. It was considered, therefore, that further investigation was not warranted.

Yours faithfully,
(R.J. Mulligan)
for Secretary of Defence
